omg, has it really been almost a week since i've posted? HAVE YOU PEOPLE MISSED ME ENOUGH YET?

anyway. a long list of random things that i have been thinking about while moving and since moving.
  1. I AM EMPLOYED OMG. once i start the job - it's in tech services in one of the carolina libraries - i will talk more about it but holy shit omg i can pay rent in october now hooray.

  2. moving related shenanigans:
    a. the icat, who is a spaz, fell in the toilet in our hotel room in lexington, kentucky and smelled terrible for a couple of days. i gave him a bath last night. it was the first time since the toilet-falling incident that i'd had the energy to wrangle a wet cat. it still sucked.

    b. the uhaul's battery died while we were trying to move it in the parking lot of the hotel in lexington last wednesday. D-E-D DEAD. i thought up many scenarios of doom in relation to this move, and THIS WAS NOT ONE THEM. thankfully uhaul sent a nice mechanic out first thing on thursday morning and he replaced the gas filter, which was apparently the problem. still: dead uhaul full of your worldly possessions in lexington, kentucky? worth a freak out or two.

    c. have you ever driven a 14' truck through the blue ridge mountains? if you haven't, don't. there's an experience i never hope to repeat.

  3. you know what i want? i want a "cap it" button on my tivo. where i can pause the tivo, hit the "cap it" button, and the screen is saved into an image file. and later you can plug your computer into the tivo and pull the image files off the tivo. i cannot believe someone has not thought of this yet.

  4. speaking of the tivo, my mother called me last week to tell me, very sadly, that she did not think i would get bravo on my cable, as my sister does not. my mother, however, was mistaken, and i do get bravo. my obsession with west wing reruns can continue. even better, though, is that I GET WGN ON MY CABLE. OMG CUBS.

  5. dear sweet jesus, the most recent shoebox project SLAYED me. i am dead.

  6. and while i'm on the subject of fannish things i'm overcome by lately, the boy and i watched fellowship of the ring on friday night and i was just. i love that movie so much. the bit where the wee elijah is dancing at bilbo's party. the colors. the cinematography. viggo in the pub in bree. anytime dom and billy are onscreen. oh. so much love.

  7. and finally, one more obsession. why i am obsessed with google search history: a couple of months ago, i wondered what the point of google search history was. after having used it for three months, i can assure you 100% that it doesn't have a point. that does not matter. i love it. i love seeing what i search for tracked like that. having my searches for the name of the canadian prime minister up next to my searches for decemberists lyrics and pictures of josh lyman and sam seaborn together up next to the day i was reading about canadian serial killers and the day my google-fu completely failed me and i have fourteen unclicked, failed searches for a wedding website. search history tells me that i search for song lyrics more often than anything else. it tells me that i watch a lot of weird movies (screencap searches) and i am the official reference librarian for my friends (searches for the university of oregon, for the name of the canadian prime minister, for "first gulf war"). but really: it has no point. NO POINT. and yet it's absolutely fascinating. and now i want to see everyone ELSE'S and i CAN'T and it is beyond frustrating.

  8. minor league baseball: is the best thing ever. it's like real baseball, except that grown men fall down a lot, and the thing is - the baseball is just shitty enough that minor league teams have to provide something else for people to watch, and so minor league games are full of ridiculous between-inning shenanigans, like grown men pushing baby dolls in strollers, and children catching beanbag hands in frying pans. i love the durham bulls. i am so totally buying season tickets next year if i can swing the money.

  9. the high-speed internet provided by my apartment complex BLOCKS MY DOWNLOAD CLIENT. wtf. i am an adult. i can make my own decisions re: downloading illegal media. please piss off thank you very much. HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO GET THE REST OF DOCTOR WHO NOW? *fist*

  10. so i'm going to rely on you guys to send me lots of new music. since i can't get it myself now. i am SO ANNOYED BY THIS. (that said: if anyone wanted to send me a billy corgan song called "friends as lovers", i would be most appreciative. you can send the file to minkittymusic at gmail dot com or just yousendit to my livejournal address. muchas gracias, minions!) i will begin the sharing by offering a counting crows cover of ryan adams' song "come pick me up". all right. now it's your turn.

  11. i don't have a desk chair. we threw out all our old chairs in the chicago apartment, because they were crappy and we bought them at a yard sale, but i still don't have a new chair in the north carolina apartment. i'm sitting on a big blue tupperware. i lose at life.

  12. in conclusion, ray kowalski.
hi hi hello how are you guys?

Congrats on the job, yo! That was fast.

And I missed you very much because I had a baseball question and NO ONE TO ASK OMG. But I looked it up all on my very own and got an answer though I would have preferred just to ask. Yes.

And Bravo is a medical necessity. *nods* I need my spin boys.

HALLO!

i applied for this job before i left chicago; i just interviewed and got it today. so it's not really that fast. :)

hardest of the hard to get
no one's little red corvette?

MIN HI MIN HI OMG

did you videotape the move? okay, maybe just the part with the cat? that would be comic gold, i tell ya. the kind of thing you'd belly-laugh at until you were sick if you were watching it from the safety of your couch instead of, you know, ACTUALLY LIVING IT. *hugs*

i'm glad you're back.

no one's little red corvette?

YES EXACTLY.

i didn't videotape the kitty, lala. but it would be something good to have. maybe he'll fall in the toilet again soon, hmmmm?

also, i finished your birthday fic! *teases* lizzies says it's good, so. :)

i am glad to be back.

I'm choosing to credit the current 3-game win streak the Bulls are on to your recent move. Nothing else makes sense. There is absolutely no good reason we are playing good come from behind and win ball finally, for the first time almost all season, now that we are out of playoff contention.

Welcome to the Triangle, OMG.

And you are damn lucky you get Bravo. It is an extremely rare channel around here.

Congrats on the successful move! (-:

posted by [identity profile] minervacat.livejournal.com at 03:25pm on 23/08/2005
well, the cubs are on a three game losing streak, so i think i can safely say that yes, i am responsible for the bulls' winning. hee.

i am thrilled to get bravo. i would have cried without it.

we should get together soon! i'm pretty swamped until after labor day, but after that, maybe? for dinner or a show or something?

HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!

I have! I have driven a huge (16', even!) truck through the Blue Ridge Mountains, except mine were the Virginia Blue Ridge Mountains. It was awful, and I very nearly had a panic attack, and I totally freaked my mom out. But I got here. A

And you're THERE! And you're EMPLOYED! And you have minor league baseball, which I am terribly jealous of! Do the Durham Bulls play the Chattanooga Lookouts? Because that's my hometown team, and even if they're shitty players, I will always, always support them. My dad was their official team historian when I was growing up, so we went to tons and tons of games. I *heart* minor league ball. Did they do the spinny bat run of dizziness at the game you went to?

Anyway, hi! I'm so glad you got down here relatively safely. I may have to take a road trip later this fall and come visit you, perhaps.

posted by [identity profile] minervacat.livejournal.com at 03:26pm on 23/08/2005
i have no idea if the bulls play the lookouts. are the lookouts triple-a? that's what the bulls are. if they are, i will have to go see them play!

you should totally come visit me. any time you want. except when i'm not here, of course!

HI!!!!

Glad you made it okay, and sounds like you're starting to settle in. Yay!!

Of course we've missed you - but now you're back.

(And also sorry I didn't get to see you before I left - I have been living in my own stress-ball-world, and didn't think you needed mine to collide with yours...)

posted by [identity profile] minervacat.livejournal.com at 03:28pm on 23/08/2005
oh, honey, i'm sorry to hear that your world is a big stressball. that sucks. i know from experience that that sucks. hee.

i am sorry to have missed you, but i should be home to visit sometime this fall, and we'll get together then, yis?

MIN MIN MINCAT!

HI!

Hee, nice moving adventures. POOR iCat!! Meep. And poor you.

Congrats on the job and the ability to pay rent so you don't get kicked out and have to live on the street without bravo or stupid cable providers who don't let you download your illegal media.

If this means you want me to send you the doctor who eps, you let me know.

posted by [identity profile] minervacat.livejournal.com at 03:30pm on 23/08/2005
i just need father's day and the empty child, swm! I HAVE ALL THE OTHERS. i am SO ANNOYED that i can't download stuff here. what do i look like, a shiftless undergrad? SERIOUSLY.

if you wouldn't mind sending the eps, i would appreciate it immensely. i will trade you due south s4 for them!

i love the google search history too! partly because i tend to close tabs prematurely and have to do the same searches again later, but also just staring at it. i also love how my various browsers retain gmail subject lines. alphabetized and out of context, they are super funny.

posted by [identity profile] minervacat.livejournal.com at 05:00pm on 23/08/2005
when i was using the lj web posting client, i used to love seeing my subject lines from there turn up other places. out of context, they are indeed funny.

i'm going to be working for library systems, based out of the davis library. i figure you're probably the only person reading this that that info would mean anything to. :)

I am jealous that you are employed and going to be in a grad program!

But also I wanted to play devil's - or perhaps, is there a demon in purgatory, kind of a middleman demon between you and the devil? anyway whatever that thing is - advocate.

The reason your apartment complex is blocking your download client (or, probably more accurately, the ports on which your download client communicates) is that they don't want to get sued by the RIAA/MPAA. (Plus it slows down the connection for the rest of the building. Remember the network at Carleton when it would take 10 minutes to render CNN.com? Welcome back to academia!)

posted by [identity profile] minervacat.livejournal.com at 05:08pm on 23/08/2005
well, i don't live in an on-campus apartment - i'm off campus, in the next town over from chapel hill. but yeah, i know that's why. it still annoys me, though. i watch too much weird canadian tv to be cut off from my downloads!

hee. how are you settling into nyc? things going well?

Buy a desk chair at Goodwill (or similar Carolina thrift store). We bought all three of ours there, over a period of months, for less than $10 apiece, and they were in nice condition. For some reason, desk chairs seem to be something people give away easily.

I join you in New Grad Student weirdness, envy you your job, and envy even more the fact that you're in your apartment. I get mine in two weeks, bah.

posted by [identity profile] minervacat.livejournal.com at 05:09pm on 23/08/2005
oooh, good call! maybe tomorrow i'll find out where the local goodwill place is and go look for something. i was dreading shelling out a ton of money for a crappy target desk chair; that's a great idea!

my sister is a 1L at duke this year; she's not ALLOWED to work. is it the same for you guys?

Go you!

As far as your Internet access, contact tech support (be nice, but still firm; it gets you SO much farther) and tell them which ports you need to have opened up and see if they can do it. If they say no, ask to speak to their supervisor. Tell him it is necessary for your "communications applications" to work properly and ask him what the proper channels are for applying to get the ports opened. If HE gives you the runaround, ask to speak to HIS manager and ask him the same thing. If they don't want to do anything about it, talk to the apartment manager and tell him that tech support is not addressing your issue.

It's worth a try. I hope you get it worked out!

posted by [identity profile] minervacat.livejournal.com at 07:26pm on 23/08/2005
oh, thank you for that idea! i have to call tech support for another question anyway, so i'll just tack that on, too. that's so helpful!
