Beautiful, beautiful work. I love Ray loving Chicago (and Stella--unrequitedly, it seems. Poor Ray!) I understand the feeling that the story's not complete; it does seem to stop abruptly. I'm not sure why I get that feeling, because it's certainly okay to end with Ray's taking the Vecchio job. Maybe just because it didn't feel finished to you. You could add to it or write a sequel, either way. But I hope you continue, because you are SO good with Ray's background and the Chicago love and the Ray love.

I think this scenario departs from canon just a bit, but you definitely get away with it. Chicago cops have to have 60 college credits, for example. So he has to have stuck it out a little longer. (I'm not sure you can convince me that Ray is a July baby! I think he gets Callum's birthday all the way. That restless energy is totally Virgo. He's certainly not a Leo. You could maybe make a case for Cancer, though I'd say he's more likely Cancer moon like CKR. But hey...who else but me will even care about this stuff. *is a dork*)

The detail on Chicago is fabulous. Every time I read something of yours now I get more determined to see Chicago. The part that's outside the terminal at O'Hare. :) I can definitely see Chicago-love as part of Ray K. Way more than of Ray Vecchio. I'm not sure why. But it just fits. The detail on Ray's life is fabulous too. Having to fix his glasses with tape because a bully beat him up. Not wanting to see the ugliness too clearly. Oh, Ray. It makes me just want to hug him. :)

Anyway. I'll say again. Beautiful, beautiful writing.

[livejournal.com profile] insidian told me, via email, that this doesn't feel done to me because i just haven't come to terms with the fact that it is finished *grin*, so maybe i'm just projecting my own issues onto this and they're bleeding through to you. :) i'm not sure i'd like to write a sequel, either way; i sort of feel that that's where all of the gangsters live is the other half to this, even if the details of the stories aren't all the same. so i guess i feel like i already did write the second half? hmmm.

i kind of like the idea of ray taking night classes to finish up the credits he needed to go to the academy; i used to live upstairs from a cpd shift supervisor, and you can sit for the entrance exam without having those credits, as long as you get them before you finish the academy, so there's always that option for ray. :) and i know nothing about astrology so i can't speak to ray being a typical virgo, but i thought there was ... well, chicago julys are long and hot and the city sort of hums with this restless energy that it doesn't always have during the rest of the year, and ray born in that month just made sense to me. but, you know, that's just me.

thank you so much for these lovely commentsl i'm so glad you enjoyed this.

Oh, that makes sense. Yes, see, I do think this is fine as a complete story. Maybe you left some cues in there somewhere that reflect your indecision at the time. It's really very fine to end with his taking the Vecchio gig.

(And darn--I have a WIP with the very same title that I started during the undercover challenge at ds_flashfiction and didn't finish. I'll change the title. :)

Oh, I love that. That little detail has been bugging me in my own work. Okay if I use the idea?

Like I said, I'm a dork, no one else will care, and the stuff with the fire hydrant, etc., is terrific.

No, I get that; you're right; it totally works in the story. It's just that with a little astrology background, I've been wondering about his birth chart and how he might express that, and wondering about his birthday (since we know the one date it isn't is May 28. Like I said. Dork. Sorry. :)

Anyway, I lovelovelove Ray, and your work always brings the Ray love closer (and the Chicago love), so I adore your writing.

titles are free creatures; don't change yours on my account, okay? :)

oh, gods, of COURSE. i'll probably never use it in anything myself, and i'd love to see it go to a good home. i used to sit in the laundry room and pick my neighbor's brain about the real details of the cpd, and i've never used any of them. (although i did consider applying to take the exam for the academy for a while, but never did.) i'd love to see the stuff i learned get used.

and thank you, thank you, thank you, again. :)
