happy birthday,
eleveninches! you're the best 2IC a former accountant from the pegasus galaxy could ever want. come visit us soon, i'll buy you a drink. xoxoxoxo.
fact: my love for lt. colonel cameron mitchell cannot be textually rendered.
fact: i cleaned the bathroom yesterday. i cleaned it half-assedly, but it's clean.
thursday, thursday. thank god. despite my inexplicable unrelenting cheerfulness all week, this week has really been a misery of the 95 degrees, 110% humidity, too busy at work sort, and tomorrow the maternal unit arrives in the nc. she will take me grocery shopping and buy me gift certificates for the movies and let me run wild in barnes & noble with her credit card. we will probably also watch a lot of movies on dvd and tivoed usa detective shows, and as i said to the boy last night, having the maternal unit visit is kind of like having fangirls visit, only with less drinking and better credit limits.
anyway, thursday: top five songs to wake up to. you know. it's hard to get out of bed some mornings. (every morning.) what gets you up, what gets you going. you know.
my list:

my list:
1. "cartoon heroes", aqua. i DARE YOU to have a bad day if this is the first song you listen to in the morning. seriously. it's impossible.OKAY, NOW YOU GO.
2. "always keep an edge on your knife", corb lund band. when i'm waiting at the bus stop, i like to remind myself to sharpen my hair knives, or i might be unprepared when someone at work inevitably does something wretched or makes me do something wretched.
3. "3rd planet", modest mouse. i have no logic for this, but this song has been on pretty much every one of my morning playlists sinceonthecontrary gave me the album back in february.
4. "pop", *nsync ... wow, there goes ALL MY MUSIC CRED. um. i liked listening to this when i took the train to work in chicago? because i would do my little commuter standing-in-place dance and cute boys would look at me and smile? um. MOVING ON.
5. "manifesto no.1", shooter jennings. if this song doesn't make you want to get up and kick ass all day (or, you know, get up and have a lot of sex all day, whichever), i firmly believe that you are dead inside.

1) Here I go Again-Whitesnake.
Um, should I be embarrassed I love this song? When it kicks into the chorus, you sing along at the top of your lungs and headbang if it doesn't hurt too much.
2)Love and Memories-O.A.R.
I fell in love with this song when they played it during the women's ncaa tourtament. Just when you think it's over it kicks in again and you can sing along again.
3) Travelin' Thru-Dolly Parton
I love Dolly Parton. Big hair and all. That women has style and grace and this song speaks of hope to me and getting through days when you feel you can't get through them.. because they are transient and life goes on and happens.
4)Nothing on Me-Shawn Colvin
When you feel the world is sucky and that things are going against you this is a reminder that you have yourself and that others don't have things on you, that it's all up to you.

2. "It's the End of the World As We Know It" - REM
3. "We Didn't Start The Fire" - Billy Joel
4. Any Chemical Brothers song. "Block Rockin' Beats" for example.
5. Any Manowar song. "Hail and Kill" for example.
If you look closely, you may be able to spot a pattern in my selections. Guess it and win a cookie.

Song to Wake up to
I woke up this morning and the sky...it was blue ...oh that reminds me. I am through with you. It's also on my top five "Getting over a breakup" songs, in case you were curious.
Girls Just Want to Have Fun Cyndi Lauper Because the shower has fun acoustics and it's not like there are any lyrics to remember at oh-dark-thirty.
Cheap Sunglasses ZZ Top - apparantly my "morning" mix is also my "Road Trip" mix. Whodathunk?
Good morning The one in my head is sung by Gene Kelly and whatshername. Not so much to get me out of bed, but to drive the boy out of his bed and into the shower. I alternate this with the Good morning to you/good morning to you/ We're all in our places/with bright shining faces..." song. Because CPS frowns on whips used on six year old, but these two are nearly as effective. Especially with my singing. (I've been known to startle crows. Got invited to leave the children's choir. There's a reason I don't sing in public.)
And I'm saving the fifth one for the super-perfct one that will occur to me once I've hit "Post comment"

2) The Divine Comedy - Charge. Ever since I saw them live and Neil led us in yelling 'Charge!', I have fallen for this song.
3) Elvis vs JXL - Little Less Conversation. It's The King and it makes me do the communiter dance.
4) Modest Mouse - Float On. Because, much like you, there is apparently an unwritten rule that my playlists include a MM song.
5)Chesney Hawks - I Am The One and Only. How can you resist it?
If it helps, Pop is a close runner up. It was on Prague's morning play list and as a result, still lives up near 'we build this city' on my 'most played tracks'. But then, I &heart; Nsync anyway. :g: Popslash, yay. :g:

"float on" is an excellent choice. *thumbs up*

1. "Holland, 1945," Neutral Milk Hotel. My general "get Caroline off her ass and moving around (usually dancing)" song.
2. "Miracle Drug," A.C. Newman. Kind of has a similar effect that #1 has on me.
3. "Four Leaf Clover," Old 97's (the version with Exene Cervenka). Okay, I'm realizing these songs all have basically the same effect on me.
4. "Slow Hands," Interpol. I have this image of choreographed dancing bears in my head when this song plays. It's a long story.
5. The Project Runway Santino Rice/Tim Gunn remix. (http://santinorice.com/2006/03/dance-mix.html) This is the actual song that my cell phone plays to wake me up. It's so weird that it works.

... there's a version of "four leaf clover" with exene cervenka? HOW COME I DIDN'T KNOW THIS.

Ok. My real list will come later today.

2. Walk On The Wild Side - Lou Reed. Often I need my mornings to start slowly.
3. Radar Love - Golden Earring. For when I want them to start a little faster.
4. Town Called Malice - The Jam.
5. I Wanna Be Adored - Stone Roses. A slow start and a sentiment to being every day with!
Apparently my morning music is disproportionately old. which probably says something. And at the moment, the alarm on my phone plays the Imperial March from Star Wars. It's possible something a little less ominous would be a better note on which to start the day.

yay for having mason on your list. "keepin' it real" was on many a morning playlist of mine back in chicago for certain.

1. Weezer. I woke up every day for an entire summer to the first song on the blue album. Ever since I have hated this band with the passion of a very grumpy morning person. But having to waking up to turn off the damn alarm thereby getting my blood pressure up certainly managed to make my mornings more productive.
2. Barbie Girl, Aqua. I can't help but smile and giggle at this song. Perfect for waking up with a smile.
3. Rise and Shine. You know the gospel-ish one? That talks about God and has random claps and is the wake up anthem of every church camp? That one. *has childhood flashbacks*
And that's all I've got. I really don't like to wake up, so I kinda suck at this one.

AQUA! aqua = apparently the best wake up music ever. heee. :)

- compared to some, i've been around, but i really tried so hard. that echo chorus lied to me with its hold on hold on hold on hold on.
2. breathe me, sia.
- i am small, and needy, warm me up, and breathe me.
3. i will go quietly, shivaree.
- i will go quietly, don't move your chair.
4. decatur, sufjan stevens.
- down to the river where they caught a wild alligator.
5. i gotta get drunk, the little willies.
- i gotta get drunk, i can't stay sober, there's a lot of good people in town.

I like to dance in the mornings
2) "I Turn My Camera On" by Spoon
3) "Pour Some Sugar On Me" by Def Leppard
4) "I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred
5) "Heart Attack" by Olivia Newton-John
Nothing wrong with a little cheese in the mornings, if it gets you out of bed.

2. "Funny Little Frog" -- Belle & Sebastian. My favorite song from their latest album, The Life Pursuit: sweet and goofy and bouncy and just fun.
3. "Vul'indlela" -- Brenda Fassie. Ms. Fassie was South Africa's answer to Madonna; this song was her big club hit the year I was there.
4. "Marabi" -- Mafikizolo. Another South African band; they usually play more poppy/clubby stuff, but this one is more of a throwback to township jazz. It's upbeat but also sort of gentle; a good way to ease into your day.
5. "Mdlwembe" -- Zola. Okay, I just started scrolling through my South African playlist and kept coming up with all these great songs. This one has some fantastic hooks and that heavy, get-up-off-your-ass-and-DANCE beat.
Honorable mention goes to Norah Jones' "Sunrise", which is perfect to listen to when you have the time to just lie in bed for a while and wake up slowly.

I don't know how you can listen to this song without your hips moving. It gets me pumped, and I rap right along with it. It's so sad.
2. "You Can Do It" by Ice Cube, Mack 10, Ms. Toi.
OMG, another song that makes me want to dance. Pretty much anything that makes me dance gets me all pumped up in the morning.
3. "Boom, Boom" by John Lee Hooker.
Thing song makes me crazy. In the good way, that is. This is the song that makes me strut.
4. "Invincible" by OK Go.
This song gets me insanely pumped up and it makes me think of John, and the double punch combination makes it AWESOME.
5. "Dick in Dixie" by Hank Williams III
It's fast and fun and loud and obnoxious and rude as all hell. I love it.

Velvet Underground, Cool it Down
REM, Radio Free Europe
Josh Ritter, Snow is Gone
And, ok, for a little more energy, CCR, Fortunate Son
And I forget what my fifth one was, so I'll just say that mostly, I listen to local college radio, WERS, whose "Coffeehouse" every morning is really just about the right speed. And that I have enough different remixes of Pop that I am not one to judge.

1. Sing Loud, Sing Proud by the Dropkick Murphys. Because waking up at six am was unnatural when we used to live far away from school, and listening to Which Side Are You On? made me feel sufficiently socialist for the day.
2. Drunken Lullabies, by Flogging Molly. For the same reason, also because I have a ridiculous amount of love for the song What's Left of the Flag for Me. Are we seeing a trend with liking songs about causes I'm too cynical to believe in in real life?
3. Plans, by Death Cab for Cutie. After we moved closer to school, my morning music became more of the depressing pop kind. I think it signaled a change in my temperament. But my favorite song on the album is probably Someday You Will be Loved, becaue it's wonderfully sad.
4. More Adventurous, by Rilo Kiley. I love Jenny Lewis. And there is a lot to be said for depressing pop music. A bit morbid that my favorite song is Accidntel Deth, but I love it anyway.
5. Rabbit Fur Coat, by Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins. Mostly because this is the most awesome album ever, and listening to it makes me feel bizarrely and inexplicably evil. I'm going to say You Are What You Love is my favorite song on the album.
