  1. [The New Familiars @ the Local 506] Chapel Hill, NC. 01.22.09. Supported by Holy Ghost Tent Revival. I did a scary thing on Thursday night, shooting this show; I didn't like the way that my pictures were graining up at ISO1600, so I dropped it down to 800 and decided that I would take what I got with that. This is scary because the 506 is a black hole most of the time and you need fast speeds pretty much everywhere to get anything, and yet: it worked. Granted the light was better -- yellower -- than usual, but still. It was an accomplishment.

[Holy Ghost Tent Revival @ the Boot] Norfolk, VA. 01.23.09. Supported by the New Familiars. The same bill as Thursday, flipped, and four hours away instead of five minutes. A delightful road trip and a great set, and a whole bunch of guys who were surprised and thrilled to see me and shep. And, because it was out of town and in an unusual venue, it gave me a chance to move around some without fighting crowds and to shoot from some different than usual angles. (Like sitting in a chair at a table in front of the stage. Or hanging over the edge of the stage from a booth.) When you shoot the same bands over and over again, you start looking for ways to take different pictures, and this gave me some.

[the Rosebuds @ the Cat's Cradle] Carrboro, NC. 01.24.09. Supported by Megafaun and the Love Language. The first show I've shot in the Cradle with their normal lighting scheme, and it was so much fun. Great color, great lighting, three really visually interesting bands, plus, you know, the music was awesome. Megafaun -- the three members of Bon Iver's old band! I love them way more than I love him -- is always a blast, and the Rosebuds were thrilled to be home and to be playing to a cheerful, sold out crowd that was thrilled to see them home. I can only hope that the Annuals show next weekend is as a fun. (Plus: Ivan Howard and Kelly Crisp are very, very attractive. I like looking at bands that are that hot. What? I'm shallow.)

  2. Digital Photography School: The Biggest Secret of Photography.

  3. The National -- <3 Matt Berninger -- is recording a new album this year, theoretically, and they are definitely producing new material. [The National -- "So Far Around The Bend"] 5MB, .mp3. It's from a compilation benefit disc of some kind, and it's good. Then again, I think everything they do is good. But, liek, even objectively! Objectively, it's good, I swear!

  4. [My Chemical Romance -- "Desolation Row"] 3MB, .mp3. And for comparison, because when someone covers Dylan, the original is necessary. [Bob Dylan -- "Desolation Row"] 11MB, .mp3. I like the MCR version a lot, but I prefer Dylan. I often prefer Dylan to many things. For example, today I definitely prefer Dylan to working. So it's not really a statement of opinion but mostly a fact of my existence that I prefer the original.

  5. The new Jason Isbell album leaked yesterday and I had no problems downloading it because a) I've already bought tickets for a Jason show the week of the actual release date and b) I know I'll buy it on CD if only so I can fondle the gorgeous tripped out smoked too much weed album art and c) no, seriously, the amount of cash I will hand over to Jason Isbell this year isn't even funny. And, oh, you guys, this might not be the best album released this year but it will be my favorite hands down without a doubt. ♥

Also: hilarious adorable 20 questions interview Jason at Popmatters. My crush on Jason is epic.

  6. My right foot is asleep. >:( And also I hate days where I have to hurry up and wait for other people to get back to me. No lie, I think the IT guy in the registrar's office is avoiding me on purpose. >:(

I had gotten neither the National nor the MCR—oh, the travails of limiting my for-fun internet time in deference to stupid Work!—so thank you, bb!

Also, yay Jason! Which are your fave songs so far?

you are most welcome! i want matt berninger to give me a new album NOW.

to answer your question: ALL OF THEM OMG. but specifically: good, cigarettes & wine, the blue, streetlights. i don't think seven mile island counts because it already had 55 plays in my itunes library before i even got the rest of the album. :D

*g* Niiice. I'm loving the whole damn thing too... Jason, how so talented? (Also, that interview was delightful. ) So far I think "The Blue" and "Sunstroke" are my favorites, but that often changes as I listen more....

Man, I hope I get to see him live someday! I will be gone by the time he hits DC.

Oh man. I'm gonna have to learn a whole set of new venues and somehow keep up with them! Because yes, that'd be amazing.

Jason's interview makes me smile so much. And I have the new album downloaded and just need some non-kid time to listen.

Also: Dear Jason - play some dates on the west coast, or I will have no choice but to kick your ass.

He's just such a *boy* and yet such a *man* and I really kind of want one.

Also, having heard that he and Patterson were both in DC for the Inauguration, I kind of want to write them meeting up and having a beer. Maybe playing pool.
