This one's for all the librarians -- and there are a lot of you, which always pleases me! -- on my flist; the rest of you will probably find this inexplicable and unfunny: today, during a discussion about taxonomy integration, I turned to my boss and said, "Well, you know, I've always wanted to put 'rebuilt the LCSH from scratch' on my resume."

The sad part is that I was only half-kidding. Oh, library humor, how close to home you sometimes strike.

That's awesome. Also, I'd kind of want to help you, and I'm not even a cataloger.

well, if you know of any good, free taxonomies on the subjects of sociology, psychology, or medicine, you CAN help me! :D

*laughs and laughs and laughs*

Haven't we all wanted to do it? At least once a day, and more when trying to explain/teach how to use it?

i don't actually have the urge very often, but i'm working on research project involving classifying a specific large set of data with taxonomies, and LCSH actually isn't deep enough for what we're doing so we're cobbling together other taxonomies, and it is, essentially, rebuilding the LCSH for my own purposes.

except not quite as complicated in the end, we hope. :D

You know, if anyone I know can do it, you can!!

well, they're paying me to make an approximation (well, really, an approximation through many smaller subject-specific taxonomies), so here's hoping it works! :D

I don't mind LCSH *that* much, but fuck, I HATE Dewey and would really like to "re-do" it!

hell, if you're going to re-do dewey, just start from the ground and build something reasonable scalable instead. :D

Dude, someone needs to do it. In library school, one of my profs said the LC catalogers lived in the basement which explained why subject headings were so bizarre. I have not yet found a better explanation.

I have been known to describe parts of my job as "throwing AACR2 to the wind and single-handedly rebuilding it." :D

AACR2 SHOULD be thrown to the wind! Throw with abandon!

i'm rewriting a thesaurus at work when no one is looking, so i totally hear you. I'm approximately 4% done at this point and have written nearly 40 pages in word.

So I totally hear you. Can I help?

I need good taxonomies for Psych and Sociology; can you help with that? :D

see...this is where I'm not as much help. biology? math (maybe)? uh..."muggle magic", i'm your girl. i know so little about the social sciences (other than library science) my liberal arts degree and the general studies course at my undergrad should be put to shame.

but...you know. you have to start somewhere. and i'd try my very best. i'd just need a bit of a head start. :)

on a related note, i'm going to email you.
