minervacat: (breaks my heart to see you this way)
Add MemoryShare This Entry
my senior year of high school, i started making a mix tape at christmas - the annual tape usually covered songs i'd listened to that year, songs that i felt summed up the year, stuff from new albums i'd bought that year.

i've been doing it ever since. sometimes the mix gets made and never gets distributed to people, which is due only to my laziness. sometimes i actually manage to burn three dozen copies and mail them out on time. it goes both ways. but! thanks to yousendit.com, i've got a great new way to distribute the mix.

so here it is, in one convenient zip file (um, that's 60MB big, so dialup users, beware). the track list is behind the cut; the file is available for download here. it's at yousendit, so click on the link and then download the file from the yousendit page. make a playlist and listen to it on winamp! burn it to a cd! ignore it altogether! whatever floats your boat.

this is the minervacat christmas two-thousand four mix: drunk with the only saints i know. enjoy it. ♥

one: "dear chicago" (ryan adams): dear chicago, you'll never guess/you know the girl you said i'd meet someday/well i got something to confess/she picked me up on friday/asked me if she reminded me of you/i just laughed and lit a cigarette/said that's impossible to do

two: "thieves like us" (new order): i've lived my life in the valleys/i've lived my life in the hills/i've lived my life on alcohol/i've lived my life on pills

three: "drunk with the only saints i know" (carissa's wierd): this is how we all look when we die/i'm pretty sure we're crazy, saying that we're all just assholes

four: "under african skies" (paul simon): this is the story of how we begin to remember/this is the powerful pulsing of love in the veins

five: "the blower's daughter" (damien rice): and so it is/just like you said it would be/life goes easy on me/most of the time

six: "shirt" (peter mulvey): and it's the same old friends on new year's eve/the same snow falls on same old leaves/and there's the same old joy, same old hurt/the same old corduroy shirt

seven: "cathedrals" (jump little children): in the cathedrals of new york and rome/there is a feeling that you should just go home/and spend a lifetime finding out just where that is

eight: "ontario, quebec and me" (mary lou lord): you don't need my christmas cards/you already have my heart/this has been a holiday romance/right from the very start

nine: "insomniac" (billy pilgrim): i can hear your bare feet on the kitchen floor/i don't have to have these dreams no more/'cause i've found someone just to hold me tight/hold the insomniac all night

ten: "keepin' it real" (mason jennings): oh, yes, my oh my, the earth shakes when you walk by/it's a fairy tale that we made true/i can't believe that i found you/and it's oh, yes, my oh my, people turn and look when we walk by

eleven: "guided by wire" (neko case & her boyfriends): life is not a constant thing/it's only made of short stories/i couldn't even tell you where i'm from/guided by the voices i've deflected/guided by electric wire's hum

twelve: "me & jiggs" (josh ritter): on a saturday night in a town like this i forget all my songs about trains/a bar with a jukebox and you on my arm, heaven and earth are pretty much the same

thirteen: "the joyful kilmarnock blues" (the proclaimers): the question doesn't matter/the answer's always aye/the best view of all is where the land meets the sky

fourteen: "fisherman's blues" (the young dubliners): i will be the fisherman with the light in my head and you in my arms

fifteen: "a dying cubs fan's last request" (steve goodman): i've got season's tickets to see the angels now/so that's just what i'm gonna do/but you, the living, you're stuck here with the cubs/so it's me who feels sorry for you

(if the link dies, let me know and i'll reupload it. i will, however, be gone from thursday to tuesday, so if it dies then, you'll just have to wait. get it while it's hot!)

Min. I am the only person in the universe that yousendit hates. That, or I am the world's biggest idiot. I followed all their instructions and yet there is no download for me! SAD! MAKE IT BETTER, MIN! OMG!

Only, you know, when you have time. Me? I'm going to bed now. MWAH!

PS. I watched some Hornblower today.
EEEEEEEE!

YouSendIt frequently hates me, stopping downloads randomly, requiring me to start over, which, when on dial-up...

That is one seriously cool idea. Saving this in my memories until I get to a place where I can download it.

Billy Pilgrim - Insomniac.

OMG, are you fucking kidding me?

Ok, back when I was in high school, like ten years ago, I taped this song from the radio, because I'd heard it a few times and really liked it. And the more I listened to the tape, the more I liked it. I'd listen to it with headphones on really late at night when I couldn't sleep. And then one time listening to it, I thought the voices at the end of the song sounded familiar - the more I listened, the more convinced I was that the one of the voices was Emily Salliers from the Indigo Girls. Who I was obsessed with, so I trusted my ability to pick up her voice. In turn, I became obsessed with the song, but they never seemed to play it again on the radio, and so I could never tell who wrote it. And all I had was that scratchy tape of it that cut off a bit of the beginning. But I knew that song by heart.

And then somehow I forgot about it. Until I was just playing your mix this morning. I started crying, because, OMG, it was THAT SONG!

Anyway, this may seem really strange, you have made me SO HAPPY with this random thing. Thank you for this.

that song was lyric-checked in a bit of unmemorable popslash i was reading a few weeks ago, and i liked the lyrics so much that i downloaded it, and it turned out to be this gorgeous, heartbreaking song that was vaguely familiar. (turned out i had an a cappella cover of it.) and i love it. it's absolutely one of the best songs i've discovered all year, and i am so glad i could give it back to you without even knowing you wanted it. merry christmas, hon. *glomp*

I love the way the universe offers up these random things. I'm so glad you've shared all of this music - I'm already hooked on all these new people! Merry Christmas to you, too! *love*

YouSendIt says it's not available anymore.

(Thanks for putting this together, btw, it looks like an awesome mix, and i'd hate to seem like an ungrateful complainer)

yay yay!! Am so excited! Also, I'm still so in awe of such easy music sharing technology since I got my new super-fast computer. I've been uploading lots of my CDs and making mixes for friends for Christmas... maybe I'll make one to put up for y'all on lj when I get back from Christmas. whee!
Thank you for the CD! (burning as I write)

Heehee - I was already at my Mom's - so I got to use this as an excuse to finish setting up all her music downloading/cd burning-related softare. :-)

Who knows how many years would have gone by without her doing that herself...

Great CD!!!
