this was WAY better than last week's episode; great pacing, interesting non-urban-legend-based ghoulie, and plenty of inappropriate brother looks. mmmmmm, brothers.

not much to say, but i have to admit that my favorite moment of the whole episode was when dean wiped the sulfur on the back of sam's suit coat. n'awwwwwwwww. such a big brother thing to do. i laughed out loud at that bit.

who wants to come over and watch next week's episode with me? that dark room-say the name in the mirror-type urban legend has always creeped the shit out of me, and i'm afraid i won't be able to go in my bathroom afterwards. so. anybody?

a couple of months ago, i was talking about how i wanted to integrate my flickr tags with my livejournal tags with my tags on audioscrobbler1, etc - and there's no way to do that at the moment, or at least i thought there wasn't. except that technorati has done it. it pulls tags from flickr, buzznet, del.icio.us and furl, plus any blogger's site who's enabled tags in the right fashion, and it's all there. on one page. under one tag.

people, this is so fucking amazing i can't even. it's a MINIMAL INDEX OF THE INTERNET. it's still a random and unfiltered and uncatalogued index of the internet, but it is the skeleton of a classified internet. do you guys understand how fucking COOL this is? the interface is still sluggish and messy, clogged with text ads in annoying places and sort of unintuitive, but it's a BACKBONE. it's a backbone for something really fascinating, something really innovative, something we have never seen work before. it's an internet with a fucking card catalogue.

(i'm not particularly wild about the aesthetic implementation of technorati tags on blog pages - it seems clunky and, frankly, really fucking ugly, but the idea is what matters. the idea is what counts.)

back in the day when i first got online - late '95 or so - the people i spent the most time reading on the web were people like maggy donea, derek powazek, lance arthur. i was later lucky enough to fall in with ben brown and his flabjab crew for a while, back when ben was still a compsci student at the unversity of maryland, and i watched ben, derek, alexis allen, magdalen powers - i watched them explode the internet with the so-called "new media".

and the thing is that new media was sort of. it was not the cutting edge then that maybe we thought it was, except that all these people are still doing all these neat things, and they ARE on the cutting edge now. consumating, ben's wacky-brilliant new dating site. technorati, where derek works. and still and always the beautiful narrative storytelling of fray, which is probably the first site on the internet i really loved.

i'm not in touch with any of the people from back then anymore, except for [livejournal.com profile] zannah and [livejournal.com profile] dotgirl, but i still watch them from afar with a healthy mixture of awe, respect, and cynicism. the fact of the matter is that i have been lucky all my life to surround myself with crazy creative genius-type people, and then and now are no different - i'm still surrounded by crazy creative genius-type people. but the fact of the matter is that people i knew, however tangentially, once upon a time, are doing crazy cool things with the internet and its resources, just like they were doing almost ten years ago. so. that's pretty fucking cool.

and did i mention the internet card catalogue?

that said, i have some more reading about natural language processing to do. and then i have to go to class.

(for the record and unrelated to this: my favorite piece of writing re: blogs ever published. in case you cared.)

1: also for the record, i found that entry of mine BY USING MY TAGS. hooray.

I know! I've always been terrified of the thought of "Bloody Mary." Although I'm always asking myself, why do people do it? I mean, if it's true, they die and if it's not, they'll think they're going to die up until the last moment. Maybe I just don't understand that kind of thrill!

And, yes! The fact that the internet can be organized in card catalogue fashion is VERY cool! All of us with somewhat OC tendencies will be watching eagerly to see how it progresses!

maybe supernatural will convince me that it's not so scary after all.

or maybe i will spend the night huddled in my bed with every light in the house turned on, trying not to freak out. :)

It wasn't until seeing them walking around in their badass MiB suits last night that they reminded me of Connor and Murphy, but ... dude. Dean and Sam and Connor and Murphy. SOPRETTY.

i had the exact same thought at that moment. they must be secretly researching fangirls looking for triggers. *g*

You know I have a paper to procrastinate on, I can do so in the comfort of your home just as easily as at Davis. If you wouldn't mind a tremendous scaredy-cat I'm in.

only trouble is that i have class until 8:30, so i'm not usually getting home until supernatural is just starting. but we'll work something out. i welcome any company at all, even big scaredy-cat company. :)

Hey, I have something you might be interested in. My friend who makes silly websites (http://needmyspace.com/) is working on a beta of a music site that notifies you as soon as tickets for a show you might like are available. It has a lot of other neat functionality that I won't get into here, but if you're interested I can get you a password. It's one of those tools that's amazing it hasn't really been built yet.

maggy donea, derek powazek, lance arthur

Wow. That was a sudden crushing thump of nostalgia right there. Do you know I pointed someone at a fray article just last month?

it thumped down on me when i was in portland, because i bought a book of short stories by magdalen powers; and then i came home and went, huh, i wonder what all those people are doing? i've been catching up on derek's blog, just sort of feeling nostalgic and awed all at once.

and i dug my fray t-shirt out of a big of un-unpacked clothes, and i might very well wear it tomorrow.

I'll probably end up taping next week's Supernatural and then watching it at 2 in the morning or something, only adding to the general eerieness. Then I'll try to sleep and the stupid mouse living in my bedroom will scare the hell out of me several times over.

see, don't DO that. watch it in the day time! with lots of lights on! and possibly all your neighbors, just for safety! *grin*

Supernatural is so much better than I thought it'd be. I'm surprised by just how much I enjoy it. I'm in class Tuesady nights, though, and probably couldn't make it to your place til 9:15 otherwise I'd love to come watch it with you.

I hadn't heard about the tag integration. Damn cool.

well, since i have class on tuesdays until 8:30, and also i have a tivo, i usually don't start watching supernatural until 9:15 or so. so you're welcome to join me, although i have to admit that i frequently go to bed straight after i finish watching it, which is sort of lame and would maybe not be worth you driving all the way over here and then all the way back.

but! it's up to you. if you want to come over, i will be more than happy to have the company. as much company as i can get.

whoa, i forgot fray existed. also, i clicked the consumating link and the random user on the front page was someone i used to know from a dial-up bbs when i was fourteen and she was ten and we lived in the same area code. holy fuck, internet, you are still so small somehow.

posted by [identity profile] minervacat.livejournal.com at 06:40pm on 05/10/2005
i firmly believe that the bigger the internet gets, the smaller it actually becomes. see also my ref prof having written papers with someone that [livejournal.com profile] febrile, who i met via livejournal two years ago, knew in high school.

i mean you don't get fucking smaller than that.

STOP IT, INTERNET, YOU'RE CREEPING ME OUT.

I think it's fantastic (and sad) that there is so much awesome stuff on the 'net that I have missed. Amazing.

there's a lot of stuff i miss, too, i bet, but i also have the advantage of having spent a great deal of my formative teenage years running around with people who have gone on to do wacky fantastic things on the web, so i hear about them. you know. and now you know about some of them! *squish*

A thing which I just came across on Slashdot: A new web browser in progress, called Flock (http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/oct2005/tc2005105_2789_tc024.htm), which apparently integrates into its interface all those wonderful things: blogging, flickr-ing, tagging, etc., etc., etc. So that, I guess, you've got the web page you're viewing, an entry box for your blog, a button to upload photos to whichever photo-sharing service you use, a button to bookmark the page to del.icio.us (it's not clear whether it maintains its own bookmarks on the local disk, but my suspicion is that it doesn't), and so forth, sharing space in your browser window. Since they're talking about making it a free download with source available, and since the extensions page on flock.com (http://www.flock.com/) lists Firefox extensions, I expect it's based on the Mozilla/Firefox core, with lots of interface work on top of that, and it'll be quite interesting to see how it turns out.

how very cool! thanks for pointing it out - i'm not sure i want to risk my system to it until it's stabilizes, but i'll definitely keep an eye on it. :)

Yeah, I certainly wouldn't recommend rushing to try out software that the webpage proclaims is early and buggy and will occasionally crash and lose all your data, and in fact I have to admit some skepticism as to the likelihood of this ever going much of anywhere -- I'm pretty sure there are already Firefox and/or Mozilla extensions to do just about everything they want Flock to do, but they may be right about installing extensions to Firefox or Mozilla being too technical for average home users -- but it's an interesting idea at the very least, and sounds like it has the potential to be awesome. I know you're not the only one (at least, I think I've heard you say this) who would like to see local-disk bookmark files go extinct in favor of using del.icio.us and its ilk exclusively.

posted by [identity profile] minervacat.livejournal.com at 12:19am on 06/10/2005
here's where i confess and admit that i don't actually use del.icio.us for all my bookmarks at the moment; i have more than 4000 bookmarks in firefox, and the thought of adding them all to delicious and trying to tag them all sort of makes me want to puke; but someday when i have a lot of free time (christmas break, maybe) i will in fact move the entirity of my bookmarks to delicious exclusively, because why should i be the only one who benefits from my wacky brain dump of bookmarks? honestly, there's no reason why not.

i mean, i find all this stuff, right? other people should be able to use it, too, and lord knows i'd love to be able to get to my bookmarks from other places.

This episode was really good. The dynamic between the brothers is believable, and that just makes me love any scene where the two of them are together.

*hops*

I can't wait for the next episode.
