88 is the Illinois Research Corridor, or something like that. It's also now named the Ronald Reagan, but I think most people will keep calling it 88 for a while.

Now that I think about it, 57 doesn't have a name either.

If I had the knowledge, I'd color code a map. Writing it out is confusing. Besides, the smart natives have a surface route that keeps them off the expressways.

As an aside, I love the elitist icon. I've wanted to steal it for months, but I don't think I could carry it as well. :-)

NPR's traffic reports have started calling 88 "The Reagan" so its years as a number are probably, er, numbered.

And once, ONLY ONCE, I heard this:

Guy #1: So you take the Heinz about 30 miles 'til you hit-
Guy #2: The Heinz? What the fuck?
Guy #1: You know. The Heinz. Highway 57. Like Heinz 57 sauce.
Guy #2: Oh. Yeahokay. So I take the Heinz out?

Personal lingo? Probably. But I liked it. :)

Thanks, I didn't realize that. I figured the days were numbered since they're posted signs calling it the Reagan. When I lived in Naperville, I couldn't find a station that would mention it in the traffic report, unless there was a major disturbance (the daily accidents at Naperville Rd didn't count).

I like the Heinz. If that petition circulates, I'll sign it. :-)

i think that calling 57 the Heinz is the best idea ever. people who are still in chicago should start that. it would rock.

thank you for the map! it's perfect. i've been thinking about starting a "chicago resources for due south writers" site, and if i do, i will totally use that (with, of course, appropriate credit).

I've wanted to steal it for months, but I don't think I could carry it as well.
plus, if you'd stolen it, i'd have had to smack you down. i don't share well. :) (but thank you! it is one of my very favorite icons, and so appropriate sometimes. *grin*)
