Me? I'm good. Not at work - woo, federal holidays! - and it's sunny and cool and I get to go spend money on books later, so I really can't complain. What about you, my Pique? How are you?

Oh yes! You get a long weekend this weekend. We had one last weekend so sadly, I'm at work. But, happily, I'm not doing a blessed thing. I spent all morning cleaning up my mp3 files and generally screwing the pooch, and I'm just about to go out for lunch. And go to the library maybe. Or the bookstore if I'm feeling naughty.

Can you rec me a book? I need something really good to read.

The last three things that I adored were: The Bone People, by Keri Hulme, which is set in New Zealand and focuses a great deal on Maori culture, and is gut-wrenching and traumatic, but gorgeous; Lamb: The Gospel According To Christ's Childhood Pal Biff, by Christopher Moore, which is laugh-out-loud-in-public-places funny; and Daughter of the Forest, by Juliet Marillier, which is a retelling of The Wild Swans fairytale set in ancient Britain and is slow to start but after the first 75 pages or so, absolutely wonderful.

Michael says I read too much. To which I say, "Pshaw. You can't possibly read too much."

*beams at you*

As a weird coincidence, I'm reading Lamb right now :) Well not RIGHT now, because RIGHT now I'm replying to you but I was reading it 5 minutes ago before I got out of the bath.

Yay baths!

And I have to second your Marillier rec as well.

ANd I hate Bobby Flay with a passion. HE Should be flayed. Fillet of flay! Except, grr. My intense loathing knows no bounds.

Ok, I feel better. *kicks Flay*

Also, weee! Hi!

Have you read Marillier's second book? The sequel to Daughter of the Forest? I haven't, but I sort of wanted to know if it was as good as the first before I bought it. So.

Hi! *gropes you*

I read all three, actually, and one right after the other. It's been a year and a half or so, but I remember really liking the second one - Son of the Shadows - and being good with the third, but not loving as much as the other two.

Unless I got that reversed, hee ! But I think it's worth the money, although it tends to move away from the retelling aspect which is what intially brought me in - I have a weakness for fairytales retold.

Right. Then I am decided that I will use my Borders gift card to get another Christopher Moore novel because hello, teh funneh! And Son of the Shadows. If it ever stops raining and I want to leave the house, that is.

Have you read Diana Wynne Jones' Fire and Hemlock? It's one of my very favorites; a lovely retelling of Tam Lin. It's just now back in print and totally worth a read.

Ohh, I haven't! Although I've read a lot of her stuff, but that one I'd never seen in print. I must look for it!

And, god, yes Moore - I want to get Fluke next, although I still have the biggest soft spot ever for Bloodsucking Fiends, because it killed me dead.

Lamb is the only Moore I've read; I'm going to pick up Bloodsucking Fiends with the gift card. Am mucho looking forward to it.

Lamb is more...sophisticated, you can tell Bloodthirsty Fiends is older but it's...god, it's hysterical.

Also Practical Demonkeeping, the first of his books - you remember the demon Catch in Lamb? The one that was released? That entire scene is a reference to Practical Demonkeeping and the sequel.

if you felt similarly to how i did, you're remembering properly. i loved son of the shadows but child of the prophecy was less... something. also, her new series, beginning with wolfskin last summer and which promises us another book this summer, started off well. the same somewhat slow lead in, but i couldn't put it down by the end. the way that woman tells a story... :)

I think it must be her style ... it wasn't the story that I found initially slow, just the actual reading. Once I adjusted to her language patterns and so on, I couldn't put it down.

Now I'm definitely going to use this Borders card to get the sequel to Daughter of the Forest. Mmmm.

Have you read anything by Garth Nix, hon? I think you'd like him. Sabriel and the sequel Lirael are both gorgeous, and very inventive unusual sort of fantasy stories.

Well R is an English PhD/lecturer, so he couldn't ever accuse me of reading too much, but we don't read the same things at all.

Thanks for the recs! I had The Bone People written down on a scrap of paper somewhere because someone else had mentioned it, so maybe I'll try that one. I haven't read anything (besides fic) for weeks, which makes me very sad.

Not that you asked for a rec or anything, but you should read The Vintner's Luck (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0374283923/104-5868890-8271912?v=glance) by Elizabeth Knox. It's positively sublime.

I always want book recs whether I ask for them or not. I've never heard of that one, so hooray! New books! I'll be sure to look for it the next time I'm at Borders/the library.

The Bone People is truly an amazing book, but really, really hard. Emotionally twisting. Just so you have fair warning.

I didn't read anything but fic from about December to February, so I understand. I just bailed my library card out of jail a few weeks ago, so now I have access to all those books again! And all I want to do is read.

Okay, I am thoroughly warned. I promise not to blame you for any emotional distress that occurs as a result of reading that book.

And ugh! I know. I've just been so tired with the move and all the work we're doing at the new place. I've been reading poetry because as soon as I get into bed, I'm out like a light. But I need to read something now. It's imperative.

Also? On a random note, Christian Kane's voice is teh sex. I started listening to his CD again after you posted about seeing him, and eeeeeeeeeee! I loff him.

I am afraid that I think Christian Kane's band is really, really good because I have such lust for him and his voice. If I'm ever told that they're not very good, I will cry because I love them so much.

On the other hand, there is this icon. And this icon is hot, if I do say so myself.

posted by [identity profile] fitofpique.livejournal.com at 12:36pm on 31/05/2004
I think his band is good! And CK's voice is to die for. And your icon is sexass! Though I do like him better all cleaned up, with short hair, and wearing a suit. All that suppressed rage drives me crazy.

posted by [identity profile] minervacat.livejournal.com at 06:42pm on 31/05/2004
Whereas I prefer my CK all longhaired and tattooed and equally suppressed. To each her own, I suppose. *grin*
