now in a completely unrelated to basketball segue: i've wanted to be a writer for as long as i can remember. ( extensive jawing about my writerly background, and also pat conroy, mostly as context for the end of this entry, because if i do one thing well, it's talk too much; if i do two things well, it's talk too much and drink heavily )
one of my new year's resolutions was to write 500 words a day, every day, on something that wasn't livejournal. fanfiction or original fiction, it didn't matter, just. not livejournal, and not papers for school. and to encourage myself, i made myself a little excel spreadsheet where i could plug in how many words i'd written that day. and then i thought, well, why don't i make a little sum at the bottom to see how much i've written so far this month. and then i thought, well, as long as i'm keeping track of how many words, i might as well keep track of what stories i worked on on what day and hey, i can keep track of when i posted shit, too! awesome.
and then? i figured out that i really, really, really liked plugging numbers into that spreadsheet. i liked watching my total go up. i liked finishing stories. and if i was having a day where i thought i maybe didn't feel like writing, i looked at the spreadsheet and said to myself, self, you can add one paragraph each to three stories. that'll get you five hundred words no problem. and then i did, and it did, and it turns out: hey, look, i'm less crazy when i write.
someone back at the beginning of the month said they wouldn't mind seeing my spreadsheet once in a while; i would have posted this right at the end of the month, but one of the fic descriptions in my notes field had the birthday girl's name in it, and i wanted to wait until after i posted vi's birthday story so as not to give anything away. so here you go: a chart of all the words i wrote in the month of january. (ff is fanfiction, of is original fiction, and if the fandoms aren't evident from the story names, feel free to ask. i am more than happy to talk about my stories.)
i wrote a lot of words in january, people. a lot of words. it's no national novel writing month, but shit. if i continue at this pace (averaging 695 words a day), i will write 250,000 words in 2006. HOLY SHIT, THAT'S A LOT OF WORDS. go team me.
